Tom Kerns, an orphan who has grown up fighting in the streets of San Francisco, is eager to escape both his unique abilities and the men who have exploited them. While running to the east where he hopes to live a quiet life, he meets Adam Williams, and is convinced to help Adam move a herd of cattle to his ranch in New Mexico. When they arrive in Adam’s home town, they discover that the leader and founder of the town has died, and the citizens are on edge as various forces move to take control. As events unfold, Tom finds himself embroiled in a storm of deception, murder, and revenge. As Tom and Adam come under increasing pressure, Tom finds it more and more difficult to remain uninvolved, but he is torn between his loyalty to his new friend and his desire to live a life free from violence. When things become desperate, he is forced to choose between protecting his own interest and helping his friend.
